The Goldsmith Awards Program, administered by the Shorenstein Center at Harvard's Kennedy School, strives to foster a more insightful and spirited public debate about government, politics and the press, and to demonstrate the essential role of a free press in a thriving democracy.
The Awards Program began in 1991 with a $25,000 prize for Investigative Journalism and a $5,000 book prize. Since then, an additional book prize has been added - one for a trade book and one academic, as well as a prize for Explanatory Reporting.
